FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Honest answers. Specific terms always depend on the actual supplier offer you receive.

What is natural gas deregulation?

In California, the Core Aggregation Transportation (CAT) program allows eligible core customers to buy the natural gas commodity from a registered third-party supplier, called a Core Transport Agent (CTA), instead of the utility. The utility still owns the pipes and delivers the gas. It's sometimes called "supplier choice" rather than full deregulation.

Will SoCalGas still deliver my gas?

Yes. SoCalGas continues to deliver gas through the same pipelines, read your meter, and maintain the system. Only the supply portion of your bill comes from the supplier you choose.

Will my gas service be interrupted?

Changing suppliers does not involve any physical change at your home or business. There is no new equipment and no planned interruption from a supplier switch.

Is an alternative supplier always cheaper?

No. Supplier prices may be higher or lower than the utility's procurement rate depending on market conditions, contract term, and the offer. We never guarantee savings. Compare the offer to your current rate before deciding.

Are rates fixed or variable?

It depends on the specific offer. Fixed-rate plans lock a price per therm for a set term; variable plans can change month to month. The supplier's contract disclosures will state which applies.

Can I cancel?

Cancellation rights depend on the supplier's contract and applicable rules, including any right to rescind shortly after enrollment. Review the cancellation terms in the contract summary before authorizing anything.

Are there early termination fees?

Some contracts include early termination fees, and some don't. Any fee must be disclosed in the supplier's contract terms. We'll point you to it — never sign a contract you haven't read.

Who handles gas emergencies?

SoCalGas always handles leaks and emergencies. If you smell gas, leave immediately and call SoCalGas or 911 from a safe place. Your supplier has no role in emergency response.

How do I compare my current gas rate?

Look at the gas supply or procurement charge on your SoCalGas bill, typically shown per therm. Compare that figure — not your total bill — to a supplier's per-therm price, and consider that utility rates change monthly.

How does enrollment work?

After you review an offer and its disclosures, you may authorize enrollment through the supplier's approved process. Filling out a form on this website is only an information request; it does not enroll you or switch your supplier.
